About Us

Effective Positive Training

At Dog Zone Services, we believe in the power of positive reinforcement and the incredible impact that a well-trained service dog can have on an individual’s life. Founded by Kris Downey a certified service dog coach with a passion for helping those in need, our mission is to provide exceptional training to dogs and their handlers. Kris brings years of experience and dedication to each training session, inspired by the profound difference a service dog can make. Whether you need a service dog for physical assistance, emotional support, or other specific needs, we are here to guide you every step of the way. Our approach is rooted in positive reinforcement, ensuring that each dog learns in a supportive and encouraging environment. We understand that every individual and every dog is unique. That's why we tailor our training programs to meet the specific needs of our clients, fostering a bond built on trust, respect, and love.

Requirements for the Dog

No History of Aggression

Dogs must have no history of aggression towards other dogs, people, or animals. This is crucial to ensure the safety of both the handler and others in public spaces.

Easily Trained

The dog should be a breed or mix likely to have characteristics suitable for service work. While we assess each dog individually, certain breeds are more likely to possess the temperament, intelligence, and trainability needed.

No Serious Behavior Problems

Dogs must not have a history of serious behavior problems like fearfulness or separation anxiety. Such issues can hinder their ability to perform consistently as a service dog.

Under Age 4 and Physically Healthy

Dogs should be under the age of 4 and in good physical health to ensure they have the energy, stamina, and longevity to undergo training and serve as a reliable service dog for years to come.

Requirements for the Owner

Disability

01

In British Columbia (BC), Canada, individuals may qualify for a service dog if they have a physical, psychiatric, or developmental disability that significantly impairs their ability to perform day-to-day activities.

Time Commitment

03

To ensure the success of our training programs, it's crucial that participants are able to engage in training lessons over an extended period of time. The initial training process can take a year, two, or even longer, depending on the specific needs and goals of the handler and dog. Additionally, regular practice between appointments is essential to reinforce learned behaviors and ensure progress.

Support from healthcare provider

03

You must have support from a licensed healthcare provider for the use of a service dog. This ensures that the service dog is a medically necessary tool for managing the client’s disability. A healthcare provider’s recommendation is a key part of the process for legally certifying a service dog, which grants the dog public access rights.

Age Requirement

02

To ensure that all participants fully understand the training techniques and can implement them consistently at home, we require clients to be at least 18 years old. For those under 18, having a parent or guardian present during all training sessions is essential.

Realistic expectations

04

Receive continuous support and guidance even after the training sessions. We are committed to your dog's long-term success and provide assistance whenever you need it. Aware that you may end up with a dog that can only help at home or in places pets are allowed. Up to 50% of service dog candidates in programs are not able to complete training and work in places pets are not permitted.

Financial Commitment

03

Owning a service dog requires a substantial financial commitment, including initial expenses for training, and veterinary care, as well as ongoing costs for food, routine vet visits, insurance, and specialized equipment. Over the dog's lifetime, these costs can add up significantly, so careful planning is essential to ensure your service dog receives the best care.
